Join Our Team

The Refugee Welcome Center was established to help with the resettlement efforts of refugee families and immigrant groups in the City of Albany's West Hill Neighborhood. Many of the families we work with are led by single mothers. 

We are looking for friendly, patient, and creative individuals who are interested in volunteering at the Refugee Welcome Center to provide different types of assistance:

Follow our activities online!

English Conversation:  

Conduct and engage refugees in informal or formal English conversations.  Create dialogues that will help refugees express themselves, as well as, build listening and fluency skills;  Utilize topics that are useful as they manage daily activities, apply and interview for jobs, or navigate through our culturally diverse community. 

When: Tuesday/Thursday from 6:00-7:30 pm

Group English Classes:  

Volunteer to teach adult English classes that meet twice a week. Most of our students are at a beginning level. Classes are small groups that consist of up to 8 students. Teachers are expected to plan and develop lessons after going through a training program.

When: Currently, we offer daytime classes Monday-Thursday.

Playgroup:

Playgroup happens during English classes to give our adult learners access to childcare. We are seeking enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about creating a welcoming and nurturing environment for young children. As a playgroup volunteer, you'll have the opportunity to engage in creative play, storytelling, and educational activities that help these children thrive.

When: Mon-Thurs mornings/afternoon 

Administrator / Interpreter:

Assist refugees and their families in resolving issues complicated by language barriers.  Help with phone calls to utility companies, interpret billing questions, assist with forms, applications, school enrollment, internet searches, or other transactions that are challenging for those who are not proficient in speaking, reading and/or writing English.

Property Maintenance/Gardening:

We are in need of dedicated individuals to assist with keeping our facilities safe, clean, and welcoming for our residents. Tasks may include light repairs, gardening, cleaning, and general upkeep of our center and other properties. Your contribution will directly impact the comfort and well-being of those seeking refuge in our community. Whether you're handy with a toolbox or simply have a passion for creating a warm environment, we welcome your help. Join us in making our center a place of security and care for all who call it home.
